A bright emission region in the new nearby dwarf irregular galaxy Cassiopeia 1

چکیده

In recent years several dwarf galaxies belonging to the highly obscuredMaffei–IC 342grouphave been discovered. Due to its shape, colour and the presence of a few possible H ii regions, one of these objects (` = 129. ◦6, b = +7. ◦1) was suspected to be a dwarf irregular galaxy, named Cas 1. We have obtained optical spectra of the brightest H ii candidate in Cas 1. By using the Hα/Hβ emission line ratio we could, for the first time, determine a rather reliable foreground extinction of AV = 2.5 mag and thus cannot support Tikhonov’s (1996) view that Cas 1 is a member of the Local Group. For [O iii](5007 Å)/Hβ weobtained a ratio of 2.6,much higher than typical ratios for (galactic) H ii regions. The nature of the emitting nebula is unclear: a supernova remnant seems to be implausible (there is an IRAS counterpart), but we might deal with an H ii region, possibly excited by a WR star.

We present a 9 ′ × 9 ′ fully-sampled map of the CO J = 1 − 0 emission in the nearby starburst galaxy Maffei 2 obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory. The map reveals previously known strong CO emission in the central starburst region as well as an extended asymmetric distribution with bright CO lines at the ends of the bar and in a feature at the northeast edge of the molecula...

HS 1543 + 5921 – a bright z = 0 . 807 QSO in the center of the ‘ Seyfert ’ galaxy SBS 1543 + 593 ?

We show that the 'Seyfert' galaxy SBS 1543+593 is a by-chance projection of the center of a nearby galaxy (z = 0.009) onto the bright QSO HS 1543+5921 (z = 0.807). The quasar has been discovered independently by the Hamburg Quasar Survey, an automated survey for bright QSOs based on digitized objective prism Schmidt plates. Direct imaging and subsequent spectroscopy of a faint (R = 22 m) HII re...

Sdss J121811.0+465501.2: a New Low Surface Brightness Galaxy with Low Metallicity

We serendipitously find a new nearby Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy from SDSS database. We estimate oxygen abundance of its H ii region SDSS J121811.0+465501.2 from electron temperature, as well as for another H ii region, SDSS J135440.5+535309.6, located in irregular LSB galaxy UGC8837. These two extragalactic H ii regions were classified as stars in the SDSS-DR4 database, and were found ...

A Neighboring Dwarf Irregular Galaxy Hidden by the Milky Way

We have obtained VLA and optical follow-up observations of the low-velocity H I source HIZSS 3 discovered by Henning et al. 2000 and Rivers 2000 in a survey for nearby galaxies hidden by the disk of the Milky Way. Its radio characteristics are consistent with this being a nearby (∼ 1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular galaxy (dIm). Our optical imaging failed to reveal a resolved stellar population...

Interstellar Medium Oxygen Abundances of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies in Centaurus A and Nearby Groups⋆

We present results of optical spectroscopy of 35 H II regions from eight dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group. [O III] λ4363 is detected in ESO272−G025 and ESO324−G024, and direct oxygen abundances of 12+log(O/H) = 7.76 ± 0.09 and 7.94±0.11 are derived, respectively. For the remaining galaxies, abundances are derived using common bright-line methods. To compare the influence of group environ...
